Lexi was named by my Granddaughter on the first day. For the next seven months there would be no Vacations, no overnight getaways and certainly no early to bed evenings. Mornings began at 6:30 (sunrise) with Lexi. He was hungry and anxious to leave the house. For the first two months, fenced in, his trips to the backyard were easy to manage. He would forage, do his business and eventually settle down somewhere in the garden to contemplate his future. He would emerge when hungry or whenever Mom came onto the back deck. Mom was always greeted with a silly “wiggle” of the tail and some head shaking. Mom would get a kiss at each greeting. At almost three months Lexi would walk to the gate and stare into the field.
He had a connection to woods, instinctively drawn but not yet knowing what to do about it. In the meantime his time could be well spent in the Kitchen. Lexi would join us at the dinner table sampling all kinds of fruits and veggies. If he liked it he would nudge your arm for more……..if he didn’t like it Lexi would spit it out and move on to the next person. Going to the fridge was his most exciting moment. Lexi would poke his nose through shelf after shelf until he found his treats. Watermelon was by far his favorite throughout the summer. At dusk Lexi would become more active. It was the early evening hours he was most playful. Having Kalo chase him around the pool was one of his favorite games.

Eventually by 8-9pm Lexi would lay in the tall grass in plain sight of the house. There he would stay until Mom coaxed him back inside with fresh fruit. Lexi would bed down in his ever expanding doggie bed, lay down with his head held high and practice chewing his cud. Kalo and Muffin would sleep close by.
At 4-4 1/2 months lexi was venturing into the back woods in the early evening and disappearing. Each night around 10-11pm we would grab some fruit, flashlights and begin the hunt for Lexi. Seven nights a week whether in rain or fog we would have to find him……..as he would not respond to Mom’s calls. Occasionally Lexi could not be found. Mom, after a sleepless / restless night would head out to field at 6:30 am, call his name and Lexi would come running like a hungry little puppy. You could almost see the pride in him having spent an entire night, alone, in the wild! Grounding him was out of the question. This was exactly the behavior we were hoping for…..wasn’t it?If there was any doubt in Lexi’s mind it was all about to change…...other Deer were migrating through our area in the afternoons and early evenings. WE all took notice……...but none more than Lexi.
